Christine Helwick Quoted in Corporate Counsel re: Proposed Title IX Rules
Christine Helwick was quoted in a September 5, 2018 article in Corporate Counsel entitled “Proposed Title IX Rules May Bring Clarity to GCs, Help to Defendants.”
University general counsel may soon see clearer guidelines from the U.S. Department of Education vis-a-vis sexual misconduct matters. As reported last week by the New York Times, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is planning to replace Obama-era Title IX guidelines.
Corporate Counsel asked Hirschfeld Kraemer’s Christine Helwick to weigh in on the proposed new Title IX rules. Here’s an excerpt:
… Christine Helwick, former general counsel at California State University and now of counsel with Hirschfeld Kraemer in San Francisco, suggested that the new rules could bring “greater clarity and guidance” for GCs.
Helwick cautioned, though, that “a full retreat from processes that have already been developed—and in some instances embedded in state law—will surely be confusing and complicated, at least in the short run.”
The new rules, unlike the previous guidelines, will be legally binding in the #MeToo era when sexual misconduct has become a growing issue on campuses.
